Otoplasty changes the appearance of someone's outer ears. Otoplasty can take different forms, like bringing the ears in closer to the head (called ear pinning), reducing the size of the ears, or reshaping various bends in the cartilage. Other reconstructive procedures help with deformed or abscent-microtic ears. Otoplasty surgery may entail a variety of moving, reforming, adding, or removing structural ear components. This procedure is most often performed by a plastic surgeon.
The external ear is made of a thin cartilage cover over within thin skin. Ear deformity results from damaged, distorted or missing ear pieces. Many otoplasties are performed not because of actual deformity, but because the individual is displeased with the shape of their ears. For most ear operations one or more incisions give access to the structures to be sculpted. The main and often only incision is behind the ear.
