Breast augmentation or augmentation mammoplasty is a surgery that enhances the shape and size of a woman's breast for a number of reasons. One can replace a loss in breast volume after pregnancy, balance a difference in breast size, reconstructive technique following breast surgery, or enhance the body contour of a woman who feels her breast size is smaller than she wants. Surgeons are able to increase a woman's bustline by one or more bra cup sizes by inserting an implant behind each breast. When considering breast augmentation, keep in mind what results you can expect.
Plastic surgeons make strategic incisions under the breast, in the armpit, and around the nipple for inconspicuous results. Saline-filled silicone implants can be on top of or under the muscle. This is a decision that will depend on the patient's body structure and preference, as well as on the preference of the physician. During your consultation you will determine these factors.
The procedure usually takes 1 to 2 hours and is often done in an outpatient basis under general anesthesia.
Most patients need to take several days off of work afterwards. It is necessary to wait 3-4 weeks before having physical contact with breasts. Swelling, bruising, soreness, and possible reduction of nipple sensation may occur temporarily after the procedure. Rarely some women experience a tightening of scar tissue which can make the breasts firmer than desired. This can be easily treated, but would require a repeat procedure.
Breast augmentation can vary in cost based on existing medical conditions, implant and technique choices, and on the goals of the patient. Specific prices should be determined at your consultation.
